Aalholm Kirke

Has anyone ever told you how a pub named after a farm on a different island inspired the name of a church? Here at Aalholm Kirke, that’s exactly what happened. Aalholm Kirke stands before us, a testament to the growth and spirit of the Valby community. The area, originally under the jurisdiction of Sankt Clemens Kirke and later Hvidovre Kirke, saw a surge in population after World War I. This growth spurred the need for a local church. Aalholm Kirke owes its name to a former worker from Aalholm on the island of Lolland. This enterprising individual opened a pub in the 1920s on the corner of Roskildevej and present-day Aalholmvej. He named it Cafe Aalholm, a name that resonated with the locals and eventually gave its name to the surrounding area. The church’s story began in a humble way. In 1929, a room in the basement of a building on Vigerslevvej was dedicated as a meeting place for the growing congregation. The desire for a dedicated church building led to the formation of the Timotheus Sogns Vestre Distrikts Menighedssamfund in 1933. This group, later renamed Aalholm Sogns Menighedssamfund, spearheaded fundraising efforts. Despite the challenges of the Depression, the community rallied together, donating generously. Their efforts culminated in the laying of the foundation stone for Aalholm Kirke on November 20, 1938. Less than a year later, on October 8, 1939, Aalholm Kirke was consecrated. The church, designed by architects Adam Møller and Jens Bruus-Jensen, boasts a distinct, functional style. It stands as a physical reminder of the community’s dedication and resilience. The story doesn’t end there. In the late 1960s, Aalholm Kirke underwent an expansion. New meeting rooms, an office, and a kitchen were added. This expansion, completed in 1970, gave Aalholm Kirke the form we see today. Inside, you’ll find unique features like the stone altar. Inscribed with the words “It is finished,” the altar is a poignant symbol of faith. Aalholm Kirke’s journey is a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of faith.
