Thomas Kingo, a name synonymous with hymns. Kingos Kirke is named in his honor. We are standing before Kingos Kirke on Nørrebro. It is more than just a building. It is a vibrant hub of activity.

Kingos Kirke stands at the corner of Bragesgade and Nannasgade. Its foundation was laid thanks to Holger Petersen. He was a textile manufacturer and politician. Petersen donated the land and the tower. He famously said a church without a tower is like a priest without a collar.

Kristoffer Varming designed Kingos Kirke in a medieval style. He completed it in 1910. Varming also designed the community center. It was added in 1927-28.

Kingos Kirke is an active church. Three priests are assigned to it. There is a children’s club. A youth club thrives here. A dedicated congregation calls this place home. Services happen every Sunday at 10:00 AM. English services occur every third Sunday. An African congregation also holds services here every Sunday at 1:00 PM. Something is always happening at Kingos Kirke.

Look closely at the altar. The unique image is by Erik Henningsen. He gifted it to the church. His son was lost and then found. The painting shows Jesus holding a child. The background is Nørrebro’s houses and chimneys.

The baptismal font bears Thomas Kingo’s coat of arms. This detail connects the church to its namesake. Kingo was a famous hymn writer and bishop.

Kingos Kirke is a folk church. It welcomes everyone regardless of age or background. It strives to be relevant and inclusive.

In 1908, Sankt Stefans Kirke’s parish split. A residential area sprang up. It housed over 9000 residents. The need for a new church was clear. Johannes Erichsen from Løgstør was a major contributor. He helped fund the construction through Den Københavnske Kirkefond.

Kingos Kirke embodies community. It is a place of worship and a gathering space. It is a testament to faith and artistry. The church reflects Nørrebro’s spirit. Its doors are always open.
