The Hans Christian Ørsted Institute is located on Universitetsparken 5, within the university’s North Campus. Interestingly, mathematics wasn’t always part of the Faculty of Science. Originally, from the university’s founding in 1479, mathematics fell under the Faculty of Philosophy. It moved to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 1850. The institute itself was established in 1934, thanks to a generous donation from the Carlsberg Foundation, celebrating the university’s 450th anniversary. The current building became its home in 1963.
Within these walls, diverse mathematical disciplines intermingle. Harald Bohr, brother of the famous physicist Niels Bohr, is a notable alumnus. His work on harmonic analysis and almost periodic functions in the 1930s significantly influenced the field of analysis.
