Picture the scene: a crisp autumn afternoon. The sun dips low casting long shadows across Viby Idrætsanlæg. This isn’t just any sports facility. It’s a vibrant hub a testament to Aarhus’s sporting spirit. Viby Idrætsanlæg holds a rich history woven into the fabric of this community.
Viby Idrætsanlæg wasn’t built overnight. Its story starts long before its official opening in 1953. In 1918 Viby Idrætsforening was founded. Athletics and gymnastics were the initial focus. A fusion with Viby Gymnastikforening in 1921 expanded their reach. Football however needed more space than Viby School could offer. So a field was created around Grundtvigsvej. Its inauguration in 1935 marked a milestone. A football match between Viby Idrætsforening and Odder Frem celebrated the occasion.
Ambitious plans for a larger sports complex followed. The goal was to include running tracks and a modern clubhouse. Engineer N K Hansen spearheaded the project in the late 1940s. The initial budget was 600000 kr with state funding of 225000 kr. Construction started in 1949 after significant earthworks. Viby Idrætsanlæg finally opened in 1953 at a cost of 780000 kr.
The complex was impressive. Running tracks surrounded the main football field. There were also sandpits for high jump long jump and pole vault. Open-air stands could hold 4000 spectators. Four training pitches two outdoor handball courts and an athletics throwing area completed the facilities. Viby IF’s first match at the new stadium was on March 29 1953 against Esbjerg fB. Raising the Danish flag proved challenging due to strong winds. Despite leading 3-1 Viby IF lost 3-4.
A year later a new clubhouse opened. It too was designed by N K Hansen. In 1945 a separate handball division was formed within Viby Idrætsforening. Lacking their own hall they trained late at Aarhus Stadion. Their success however fuelled the desire for a dedicated hall. Viby Hallen opened in 1961. Viby’s men’s handball team won a bronze medal in the 1963-64 season. The hall hosted sports classes for local schools. It also included a stage for community events.
Further expansion plans followed. Squash and tennis courts were added. A swimming pool proposal failed. In the 1980s a large multi-hall with bowling alleys was considered but never materialized. In 1991 Aarhus Kommune approved an expansion. Hal 2 opened in 2005. Today Viby Idrætsanlæg continues its legacy. It remains a vital part of the Aarhus community. Its story is one of ambition community and lasting sporting achievement. It’s more than just a sports complex. It’s a place where dreams are realized and memories are made. A place that embodies the heart of Viby.
