Atik Sinan’s legacy whispers from the stones. We stand before the Hekimbaşı Fatih Cami a testament to Istanbul’s rich history. This magnificent mosque complex holds centuries of stories within its walls. Originally constructed between 1463 and 1470 it commemorates Mehmet the Conqueror’s triumph. It’s believed the mosque occupies the site of the Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles. The initial design included eight madrasahs a hospital a guest house a soup kitchen a library and a hamam. Atik Sinan a skilled architect designed this sprawling complex. He is not to be confused with the more famous Sinan. These were two different men.

The Hekimbaşı Fatih Cami’s story isn’t just one of construction. It’s a story of resilience. A devastating earthquake in 1509 damaged the mosque. It was repaired under Sultan Bayezid II. Another earthquake in 1766 caused catastrophic damage. The dome and walls crumbled. The mosque was rebuilt in 1771 by Muhammed Tahir adopting a different architectural plan. This newer structure is what we see today.

The original mosque featured a single dome supported by a semidome. Information about the original structure is scarce. We know the second design followed Baroque architectural styles. The current mosque boasts a central dome with a 26-meter diameter. Massive chandeliers adorn its interior. While the interior ornaments resemble Sinan the Architect’s work the Hekimbaşı Fatih Cami is unique. It’s a striking example of Turkish architectural brilliance. Its calligraphy and mimbar show Baroque influence.

The Hekimbaşı Fatih Cami complex wasn’t just a place of worship. It served as a vital center for social life in Ottoman Istanbul. Eight medreses each with 18 classrooms acted as a large university. The Şanı-Seman Medrese taught a wide range of subjects. Astronomy physics and mathematics were taught alongside medicine theology and law. The medrese was founded by Ali Qushji a prominent Persian scholar. The guest house featured 16 columns and a beautiful courtyard. Now it houses shops.

The mosque stands out. It features a solar clock on one of its minarets. This is uncommon in mosques. It’s considered one of the best examples of its kind. The graveyard isn’t only the resting place of Mehmet the Conqueror and his wife Gülbahar. It holds other prominent figures in Ottoman and Turkish history. Gazi Osman Pasha and Halil İnalcık are buried here.

Entering the Hekimbaşı Fatih Cami is free. Donations support the mosque’s upkeep. Take a moment to appreciate this architectural marvel. Let its history fill you with awe. Remember this impressive site. Your journey through Istanbul’s past continues.
