Established in 1961 Glen Eden Intermediate School stands proudly. It’s a large intermediate school. It’s dedicated to providing powerful learning opportunities. These opportunities are for emerging adolescent students. The school strives to create a positive learning community. This strengthens and grows students academically socially and emotionally. Glen Eden Intermediate School’s values are respect integrity excellence and resilience.
Glen Eden Intermediate School takes pride in its warm inclusive school climate. Students and whānau feel valued. The school offers an extensive range of exciting learning opportunities. These co-curricular opportunities meet varied interests and learning needs. Students benefit from advanced digital learning programmes. These enhance engagement and academic success.
Initially Glen Eden Intermediate School was divided into eight syndicates. These were named after New Zealand trees. Each syndicate had four classrooms. The Manuka syndicate had five classrooms. In 2010 syndicates were replaced with four mini-schools. These were named after local West Coast beaches. They are Te Henga Karekare Muriwai and Piha. All classes combine Year 7 and Year 8 students. Elected student councilors attend weekly school council meetings. The school provides enrichment programmes for students.
A technology block opened in 2001. As of 2022 it teaches one mini-school each day. It has eight classes. These are Food Technology Design Technology Sound Arts Dramatic Arts Visual Arts Hard Materials Textiles Technology and Video Production. Textiles Technology was replaced by Enviro Technology in 2019. Video Production is also home to Cactus the school’s daily TV show. The school previously had a radio station T.N.T Totally Not Television. It opened in 2010 but is no longer active.
Glen Eden Intermediate School opened a gymnasium in 2001. It has full-sized basketball and netball courts. It also has volleyball and badminton courts. The gym opening coincided with the school’s 40th anniversary. The former board of trustees chair Brian Clayton noted it as a legacy. He said it’s a testimony to things that reflect the school. An auditorium was added later. It was merged with the administration block. The school has a daily fitness programme. It includes road runs aerobics and activities on the artificial turf.
Glen Eden Intermediate School teaches the NZ Curriculum. Some classes have a modern learning environment. These have collaborative flexible classrooms. They evolve to meet changing societal needs. These classrooms differ from traditional rows of desks. Students use devices for online learning. They are encouraged to bring their own devices.
Each year the school holds cross country athletics and swimming events. Students compete in their year levels. They can try out for sports camps and the NZ AIMS Games. School teams compete in the Netball Waitakere competition. Various teams also participate in local inter-school zone sports competitions.
Every second year the school holds a major production. In 2018 it was Hairspray Junior. In 2020 it was Aladdin. In 2023 it was Shrek Jr. There’s a concert band and two rock bands one for each year level. These along with the annual talent show are widely supported. Large Pasifika and kapa haka groups are well attended. They play an important cultural role.
Every year students participate in the World Vision New Zealand 40 Hour Famine. This raises funds to support children families and communities. Glen Eden Intermediate School is a place of learning growth and community spirit. It is a place where students thrive.
