Imagine All Saints’ Friern Barnet, a beacon of faith in Oakleigh Park. This isn’t just another church. It’s a story etched in flint and stone.

All Saints’ Friern Barnet’s story starts in 1882. The northern part of Friern Barnet parish needed its own church. Thus, All Saints’ Friern Barnet was born. John Miles provided the land and funds. He ensured its creation.

Designed by J. Clarke, All Saints’ Friern Barnet embraces the Early English style. Flint walls meet stone dressings. Tiled pitched roofs complete the look. A tall tower and stone spire reach for the heavens.

Henry Stewart Miles, John’s son, became the first vicar. He shaped the church’s character for 50 years. He emphasized communion. It became central to worship at All Saints’ Friern Barnet.

All Saints’ Friern Barnet could seat 520 people. By 1903, it had the largest average Sunday congregation in the parish. An impressive 627 people gathered here weekly.

The church’s design features an apsidal chancel. A south vestry provides space for clergy. Aisled and clerestoreyed nave offers open worship space. The north-west tower and spire stand proudly. A south porch welcomes visitors. In 1907, the vestry transformed into a chapel. A new vestry addition accommodated the growing needs of All Saints’ Friern Barnet.

Inside, the walls and roofs showcase intricate decorations. Every corner reflects devotion.

However, time took its toll. The stonework suffered erosion. Cementitious repairs, meant to help, began to fail. Bulging and missing flints marred the exterior.

The spire and tower underwent repairs in 2019. The National Lottery Heritage Fund supported this restoration. But more work is necessary. Repairs to the roofs and masonry are still needed. The west end, east end vestry, and south porch require attention.

Despite these challenges, All Saints’ Friern Barnet continues to serve its community. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It is a reminder of the dedication of John and Henry Miles. Their vision shaped this sacred space. The church remains a cherished landmark in Oakleigh Park. It is a place where history and community intertwine.
