Ever wonder how old a building can be and still stand tall? Farum Kirke is an ancient testament to faith. It stands in Farum’s old village. This is now the western part of Farum. This church is Farum’s oldest building. It is remarkably well-preserved.

Let’s step back to around 1150. Construction began on the apse, chancel, and the eastern part of the nave. They used raw stones and ashlars. These formed the corners and window openings.

Farum Kirke is a Romanesque stone building. It features a square chancel with an apse. A wider nave completes the structure. The oldest addition is the porch. It stands before the nave’s north door. This was once the women’s entrance.

Around 1400 the nave was extended westward. The current church tower was added. This expansion reflects the changing architectural styles.

Imagine the church without its tower. The tower’s construction marked a significant change. It gave Farum Kirke its current silhouette.

Inside, Farum Kirke holds treasures from centuries past. The altarpiece is over 400 years old. It features scriptural panels. The baptismal font is Romanesque. It is made of Scanian sandstone. The pulpit displays statuettes of the four evangelists. Its style is characterized as rural Renaissance.

Outside Farum Kirke, a yellow-washed half-timbered building stands to the west. Next to it are the parsonage and a parish hall. The parish hall houses the churchyard administration. It also provides meeting rooms.

The old churchyard surrounds Farum Kirke. It contains 1277 burial plots. In 1970 a new cemetery opened. Landscape architect Henning Rasmussen designed it. Its layout draws inspiration from the Viking fortress of Trelleborg.

In 2010, Farum Kirke underwent restoration. New pews were installed. The interior was whitewashed. A new organ was inaugurated in 2012.

Consider the layers of history within these walls. Each addition and renovation tells a story. Farum Kirke has evolved. It has remained a central point for the community. The walls of Farum Kirke stand as a testament to time. They connect past and present.
