Founded in September 1905 North Shore Baptist Church stands proudly on land originally belonging to the Council of Three Fires. This church isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to Chicago’s vibrant history. North Shore Baptist Church began with a simple observation a mail carrier noticed many homes receiving Baptist literature yet no Baptist church existed nearby. This spurred the creation of North Shore Baptist Church.

From its humble beginnings with about 25 people North Shore Baptist Church experienced phenomenal growth. By the mid-1940s attendance peaked at 2300. This expansion necessitated several moves beginning with a rented storeroom and culminating in the current sanctuary. The church’s story isn’t solely about numbers. It’s a tale of embracing diversity.

Initially a majority European-American congregation North Shore Baptist Church evolved into a multicultural community. The church established missions for various groups including a Chinese Mission School in 1924. This school eventually became the Chicago Chinese Baptist Church. A Japanese congregation joined in 1954 remaining active for almost 70 years. A Spanish-speaking congregation formed in 1957. North Shore Baptist Church also welcomed Filipino Korean and numerous other groups of refugees.

In 1989 a pivotal constitutional amendment declared the church inclusive encompassing all its language groups. This marked a significant shift from a predominantly English-speaking focus to one that celebrated its multicultural nature. The 1996 amendment establishing the Pastoral Team further solidified this commitment to equality. All language pastors became part of a collaborative team ensuring every voice was heard.

The North Shore Baptist Church actively engages with its community. It provides after-school tutoring assists new migrants and donates to local aid organizations.
