Did Singapore ever have a skyscraper designed with an “Oriental influence”? Right here before us stands Republic Plaza, a testament to architectural ingenuity and sustainable design. Republic Plaza officially opened its doors in 1998. It was inaugurated by then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. This 66-story giant, reaching 280 meters into the Singapore sky, was designed by the acclaimed Japanese architect, Dr. Kisho Kurokawa. He’s the mastermind behind landmarks like the National Art Centre in Tokyo and the Van Gogh Museum’s new wing in Amsterdam. Republic Plaza was designed to embody a subtle Oriental aesthetic, culminating in its distinctive tapered tower. This isn’t just another steel and glass behemoth. Republic Plaza has continuously pushed the boundaries of green building technology. It was one of the first in Singapore to receive a Green Mark award in the Existing Buildings category. It later achieved the prestigious Green Mark Platinum Award. The building’s energy-efficient systems, including retrofitted chiller plants and motion-sensing lights, save the equivalent of the annual energy consumption of 1,200 three-bedroom apartments. Republic Plaza also conserves enough water annually to fill four Olympic-sized swimming pools. These efforts translate to over S$1.2 million in savings every year. Located in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District, Republic Plaza isn’t just a building. It represents Singapore’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Republic Plaza remains a remarkable feat of engineering and design, an icon in the Singapore skyline.
