Nestled amidst the gentle slopes, flowing streams, and serene marshes lies Sengeløse Kirke. This picturesque church, whose name poetically translates to “lake-meadow-pasture”, perfectly captures its idyllic setting. Sengeløse Kirke’s history stretches back to the 12th century, around 1150. The original structure, built from rugged raw and cleft fieldstones, whispers tales of a time long past. Although these stones now lie hidden beneath a coat of white plaster, they remain a silent testament to the church’s enduring legacy. Bishop Absalon, a prominent figure in Danish history, consecrated Sengeløse Kirke, dedicating it to Saint Paul and granting ownership to Roskilde’s Vor Frue Kirke. Originally built in the Romanesque style, the church featured a simple nave and a small choir. Over the next three centuries, Sengeløse Kirke underwent significant transformations. The small choir gave way to a larger extension. A tower rose towards the west, reaching for the heavens. A porch appeared on the south side, offering shelter to those seeking solace within. In the 15th century, the flat ceilings were replaced with three-bay cross vaults, and the windows were widened, allowing more light to illuminate the sacred space. Sengeløse Kirke remained under the ownership of Katrinebjerg Gods from the Reformation in 1536 until 1948, when it finally gained its independence. Inside Sengeløse Kirke, you’ll find a wealth of history. The altar, dating back to 1581, features paintings of the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection, along with depictions of the four Evangelists. A Baroque altarpiece from 1650 portrays the Holy Communion, adding to the church’s artistic richness. The granite baptismal font, possibly older than the church itself, stands as a symbol of continuity and tradition. A fascinating discovery during renovations in 2008 brought to light a well-preserved fresco, untouched for centuries. This fresco, depicting the Annunciation, offers a rare glimpse into medieval artistry. Outside, a monument stands as a tribute to Lauritz Lassen, the former owner of Cathrineberg Gods. He played a key role in freeing the estate’s farmers from their feudal ties, a decision commemorated by this towering monument. The church also houses a gravestone with an inscription commemorating Jens Ræsmisen Thæning and his wife, Mette Kirstine Sørens Datter, adding another layer to the rich tapestry of stories within Sengeløse Kirke’s walls.
