Did you know that a place so seemingly ordinary is actually the site of a potential historical discovery that could rewrite the history of Chicago? Right here, in this very park, called Spirit Trail Park, some believe that Father Jacques Marquette, one of the first Europeans to explore the Midwest, might have camped. That’s right, this park might hold the secret to the origin of Chicago itself. According to John Swenson, a retired management consultant and amateur historian, Marquette made a historic campsite in the 17th century, in Olympia Fields, the town where the park is located. This is 30 miles southwest of the Loop, where a lot of people would assume Chicago’s first European explorers would start their journey. Here, Swenson claims that Marquette used the word Chicagou or Chicagoua when referring to the area, a word that would later become the name of the city. There is a hill in the park, which Swenson and his team of local historians believe was a place of worship for Native Americans, a temple mound. They argue that the Native Americans would have chosen this spot for their religious ceremonies because it was on a major canoe route. Swenson even had a local astronomer study the spot with a telescope, which revealed that the hill’s orientation aligns with the winter and summer solstices, two important markers of the year for Native American cultures. This is a fascinating story that could change how we think about the beginnings of Chicago.
