Ponder the scene. Soldiers gather here before a crucial battle. This is Apelstein 43. It stands in Volkshain Stünz. It marks a significant spot related to the Battle of Leipzig.

Apelsteine are memorials. They commemorate the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. The writer Theodor Apel initiated them. He was a citizen of Leipzig. He lived from 1811 to 1867. He funded 44 of these markers himself. Others were erected later by private individuals. Some came from Apel’s foundation. Others came from associations.

These stones marked important locations. They noted key events during the battle. A. F. Aster sculpted them. They were erected between 1861 and 1865. Originally, the Apelsteine were rectangular sandstone pillars. They stood about 1.5 meters tall. Stones marked coalition troop positions. These had a pointed top shaped like an inverted V. The letter V was also present. Stones for Napoleon’s troops had a round top. They featured the letter N.

The inscriptions on the Apelsteine faced the battlefield. They displayed the battle’s name and date. The opposite side showed the leaders’ names. It included troop designations and strength. Arrows on the narrow sides indicated the front lines. The tops showed compass directions. Numbers up to 42 followed a rule. Even numbers were for coalition troops. Odd numbers were for Napoleon’s forces.

Apelstein 43 carries its own story. The inscription reads. “Major Carl Friccius. With God for King and Fatherland.” It also mentions the 3rd Königsberg Battalion. This unit belonged to the 3rd East Prussian Landwehr Infantry Regiment. The back reads. “Last rest on the night of October 18th to 19th, 1813 before the storming of Leipzig.”

The Battle of Leipzig was massive. It involved almost 600,000 soldiers. Napoleon’s French army fought a coalition. The coalition included Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Sweden. It was one of the largest battles in Europe before World War I. The coalition won decisively. The battle was bloody. Thousands died or were wounded. Disease spread due to the casualties. Typhus and cholera broke out. These swept through Leipzig and Europe.

Over time, the sandstone Apelsteine suffered. Construction activities affected them. Many stones were replaced with copies. Some copies used more durable materials. The copies sometimes differed from the originals. Size and shape variations occurred. Text errors appeared during copying.

Apelstein 43 stands as a reminder. It marks the last rest. Soldiers paused here before a major conflict. These men were part of the force about to storm Leipzig. Today, Apelstein 43 is a protected cultural monument. Its ID is 09292462. It’s a testament to history. It also honors the soldiers’ sacrifice.
