The bells of Paroquia Sagrado Coraçao de Jesus chime. Their resonant sound echoes through the neighborhood. A sound that speaks of decades of faith and community.
This isn’t just any church. Paroquia Sagrado Coraçao de Jesus is a living testament to faith. It’s also a story of perseverance and transformation. Its story begins long ago. It began with a dream. A dream held by Frei Thiago. He was the parish priest of Paroquia Nossa Senhora da Guia. He longed to create a place of solace for the needy. He wanted to ease the burden on the existing church.
In 1936 a dispensary opened. It was named “Sete Santos Fundadores”. It quickly became more than just a clinic. It became a community hub. This modest dispensary soon served as a temporary worship space. It was a ‘new matriz’ a precursor to the grander church to come. Construction took years. Finally around 1950 the structure was complete.
Then in 1945 the Dehonian Fathers took over. The Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus purchased the property. They purchased it from the Congregation Sete Santos Fundadores. The price was 350 thousand cruzeiros. The church’s name changed. It became “Igreja Cristo Rei e Sete Santos Fundadores”.
However the transformation wasn’t complete. On October 27 1963 the church received a new name. It became Paroquia Sagrado Coraçao de Jesus. The Dehonian Fathers remain dedicated to its community to this day.
Father Demetrius Cavalcanti de Oliveira currently leads the parish. He continues the tradition of service and faith. He’s assisted by Fathers Mateus Buss Luiz Claudio and Filipe Henrique Araujo. They uphold the legacy of Frei Thiago’s vision. A vision that continues to resonate within these walls. A vision that shaped the Paroquia Sagrado Coraçao de Jesus into the vibrant heart of the community that it is today. The bells chime again. A gentle reminder of the enduring spirit of this special place. A place where faith hope and charity intertwine.
