Our Lady of Pentecost Parish Church

Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Quezon City, nestled within the Varsity Hills residential subdivision, stands the Our Lady of Pentecost Parish Church. This architectural gem, often overlooked due to its location, holds a captivating story waiting to be unveiled. Our Lady of Pentecost Parish Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to modern art and design, a hidden treasure for those seeking beauty and inspiration. The church’s unique trapezoidal shape, dictated by its corner lot location, is cleverly masked by a circular balcony, a testament to the ingenuity of its architect, Vincent Martin “Veepee” Bondoc Pinpin. He completed the church in 2003. Inside, exposed structural beams create an illusion of movement against the stark white interiors. A striking centerpiece of Our Lady of Pentecost Parish Church is the Victorious Crucifix by National Artist Napoleon Abueva. This bronze sculpture depicts a risen Christ, a departure from traditional depictions of the crucifixion. The altar and lectern, crafted by Juan Sajid Imao, further enrich the artistic narrative. Imao’s symbolic use of stone tells the story of Pentecost, with the altar representing the Virgin Mary, the Holy Spirit, and the twelve apostles. The lectern symbolizes the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Complementing these works are the Presider’s Chairs by Agi Pagkatipunan, crafted from discarded wood, their simplicity reflecting the humility of Christ. At the north end of Our Lady of Pentecost Parish Church, a hewn stone baptistery by Imao depicts the baptism of Christ. Imao and Pagkatipunan’s artistry extends to the Adoration Chapel. A door of recycled wood, bearing the inscription “Fiat Voluntas Tua” (Your Will Be Done), leads to an evocative space where the Eucharist is housed in a bronze box adorned with the symbol of the Holy Spirit, the tongue of fire. Stained glass designs, a collaboration between Pinpin and Ronald Kraut of Kraut Art Glass, illuminate Our Lady of Pentecost Parish Church. These windows, inspired by medieval Romanesque iconography and modernist styles, depict the Pentecost. Finally, fourteen Stations of the Cross, carved in wood, trace the Passion of Christ, adding another layer of artistic depth to the church. Our Lady of Pentecost Parish Church is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a living testament to faith and artistry.
