“Where the Sugar Loaf kisses the bay” begins the tale of Forte São José. Right here, at the edge of Urca, stands a sentinel, a witness to Rio’s very birth. Forte São José, more than just stone and cannon, embodies the struggle for this coveted harbor. In 1565, Estácio de Sá, recognizing the strategic brilliance of this location, chose this small beach between Sugar Loaf and Morro Cara de Cão. He planted the Portuguese flag, defying the French who sought to claim this land. Forte São José, in its earliest form, was a declaration, a bulwark against foreign ambition. It was one of the first military sites erected by the Portuguese. Initially, a series of redoubts protected the bay: São Martinho, São Teodósio, São José, and São Diogo. These individual fortifications, in 1618, united under the banner of Fortaleza de São João, the formal name for Forte São José. Imagine Guanabara Bay, a shimmering jewel, and Forte São José, along with Santa Cruz Fort and Lage Fort, forming an unbreakable chain. They stand guard, their cannons aimed, a formidable deterrent to any enemy ship. The story of Forte São José continues through the centuries. During the empire, its defenses grew, with thick stone walls added to protect against increasingly powerful weaponry. Later, in the early days of the Republic, English-made cannons of the late 19th century were installed, some of which remain on display today. Until 1991, a military garrison called Forte São José home. Now, it houses the Directorate of Personnel Research and Study and the National War College, carrying its history into the modern age. Within the old munitions warehouse, a museum unfolds. Here, amongst old Brazilian flags, weapons, and uniforms, the story of colonization, the city’s founding, and the fort’s crucial role comes alive. A visit to Forte São José isn’t just a history lesson. It’s a journey through time, a walk through a protected enclave teeming with local flora and fauna. And the view? A breathtaking panorama of Guanabara Bay, where the echoes of cannons and the whispers of history intertwine, painting a vivid portrait of Forte São José.
