On a quiet corner in Kemang, Jakarta Selatan, stands Mushala Al Barkah. This unassuming structure holds a story that spans over two centuries. Mushala Al Barkah isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. It was built in 1818 by a man known as Guru Sinin. Guru Sinin, originally from Banten, arrived in the area around 1795. At that time, the area was unnamed and largely undeveloped. He began teaching Islam, slowly building a community around his teachings. The first structure, built in 1808, was a simple prayer house made of palm leaves and bamboo. This humble structure eventually gave way to the permanent Mushala Al Barkah we see today. Mushala Al Barkah’s architecture reflects the architectural styles of Banten and Demak, a nod to Guru Sinin’s origins and the broader influences of Indonesian Islamic architecture. The minaret resembles that of the Great Mosque of Banten. The tiered roof is reminiscent of the Great Mosque of Demak. Guru Sinin, a revered figure in the community, rests beside his creation. His tomb, along with those of his son-in-law and grandson, lies near the western side of Mushala Al Barkah. These graves serve as a constant reminder of the deep roots of Islam in this area. They are also a testament to the dedication of those who built and nurtured this community. The story of Mushala Al Barkah isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the vision of one man and the enduring power of faith. It’s a story whispered through the generations, carried on the winds of prayer. It is a story that continues to unfold within the walls of Mushala Al Barkah.
