“A safe place to talk and non-judgemental listening.” This promise resonates within the walls of The Chaplaincy at the University of Edinburgh. The Chaplaincy isn’t just a building. It is a haven for students and staff of all faiths and none.
The Chaplaincy offers pastoral support and a range of wellbeing services. Free mindfulness sessions, yoga drop-ins and the University Listening Service are available. These resources are invaluable for navigating university life.
The University Listening Service is a key part of The Chaplaincy. It offers a safe space for students and staff to talk about anything. Trained listeners provide non-judgemental support in times of crisis. They can also connect individuals with specialist resources. Appointments are available weekdays from 9am to 5pm.
The Anglican Chaplaincy also calls 1 Bristo Square home. Holy Eucharist is celebrated on Wednesdays at 1.10pm. The Chaplaincy Centre Chapel provides a space for prayer and reflection. The Anglican Chaplaincy supports the spiritual needs of students and staff.
But the story of chaplaincy at the University of Edinburgh extends beyond Bristo Square. The Catholic Chaplaincy, located at 23-24 George Square, also serves the university community. Known as St Albert’s, it provides a spiritual home for Catholic students and staff. Dominican friars serve as chaplains.
St Albert’s has a fascinating history. The original building dates back to the 1760s. James Brown designed it as part of George Square’s development. For a time, Arthur Conan Doyle lived there while studying medicine.
In 1931, the Dominican Order acquired the building. They established a chapel in the drawing room. In the 2000s, a new chapel was needed to accommodate a growing congregation.
Completed in 2012, the new chapel at St Albert’s is a modern architectural marvel. Stuart Allan of Simpson & Brown designed it. The chapel features a clear view of the garden behind the altar. It has won awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
The Catholic Students’ Union is very active at St Albert’s. They organize spiritual and social events. A student common room at 23 George Square offers a comfortable place to relax. The CSU also hosts a student Mass on Sundays.
The Chaplaincy at the University of Edinburgh is a multifaceted network of support. Whether you seek spiritual guidance, a listening ear or a moment of peace, The Chaplaincy welcomes all. It is a testament to the university’s commitment to the wellbeing of its community. Remember The Chaplaincy. It is more than just a place. It is a community.
