Did the Virgin Mary really appear to the indigenous people of Oyacachi? Here at the Capilla Católica Virgen de El Quinche – San Juan, that question hangs in the air like incense. This chapel, nestled in Quito, holds a piece of a story that intertwines faith, art, and the power of belief. The story begins not here, but in the late 16th century with sculptor Diego de Robles. Commissioned to create an image of the Virgin, Robles found himself unpaid. He then gifted his creation to the Oyacachi people. Legend has it that the Virgin had already appeared to them, promising protection from a plague of bears in exchange for their conversion. The arrival of Robles’ sculpture seemed a divine confirmation. They placed the statue in a niche in the mountains, their first sanctuary for the Virgen de El Quinche. Stories spread of birdsong filling the air around the image and a radiant glow surrounding it at night. Robles himself, after a near-death experience and a seemingly miraculous rescue, returned to build an altar for the Virgin. The Capilla Católica Virgen de El Quinche – San Juan, although not the original location, is connected to this powerful narrative. The Virgin stayed in Oyacachi for fifteen years, becoming known as the “Virgin of the Rock.” In 1604, she was moved to the village of El Quinche, lending her name to this place and eventually to chapels like this one. The original image is a captivating piece of art. A wooden sculpture, just over two feet tall, she’s adorned in a brocaded mantle, sparkling with precious stones and intricate gold and silver embroidery. But her dark face, a reflection of the mestizo population of the time, remains visible, a powerful symbol of the blending of cultures and beliefs. She holds a scepter and the Christ Child, who also bears mestizo features. The original sanctuary in El Quinche faced its share of challenges, including a devastating earthquake in 1869. Yet, the image survived. The current sanctuary, rebuilt in 1905 and consecrated in 1928, stands as a testament to enduring faith. The Capilla Católica Virgen de El Quinche – San Juan, though a smaller chapel, echoes that resilience. It serves as a reminder of the story’s origins and the widespread devotion to the Virgin. Inside these walls, the whispers of miracles and the echoes of centuries-old chants still resonate, inviting quiet reflection on the enduring power of faith and the beauty of a story that began with an unpaid sculptor and a vision in the mountains.
