Gazing upon Plaza Sevilla, have you ever wondered about its hidden connection to “Little Spain”? Right here in the Insurgentes Mixcoac neighborhood, Mexico City gives a nod to Spanish cities. Streets bear names like Málaga, Santander, and Cádiz. While Seville missed out on a street name, it graces this charming roundabout. Plaza Sevilla’s centerpiece is the Fuente de Sevilla, the Seville Fountain. This Art Deco gem, built in the 1920s, shares its artistic DNA with Parque México in the Condesa colonia. Architects Leonardo Noriega and engineer Javier Stávoli, known for Parque México, also designed this fountain. Look closely at the almost pyramidal design. The undulating corners and stained-glass on all four sides are characteristic of the era. The Sun and Moon paintings near the top add a celestial touch. The fountain basin, carved in stone, proudly displays the designers’ names on a plaque. Sadly, by the 1970s, the fountain fell into disrepair. For nearly 50 years, vandalism and neglect took their toll. Even an original clock disappeared. But Plaza Sevilla’s story doesn’t end there. In 2020, the fountain’s renovation breathed new life into this century-old landmark. It now stands as a testament to its enduring beauty and a symbol of revitalization. Plaza Sevilla invites you to pause and appreciate the blend of history and artistry.
