Picture this. You are standing at the entrance of the Villa de l’Astrolabe. A quiet unassuming street in Paris’s 15th arrondissement. This unassuming street holds a fascinating secret. The Villa de l’Astrolabe is named after the ship of a famous explorer. Jean-Francois de La Perouse used this ship on his voyage around the world.

The Villa de l’Astrolabe wasn’t always a villa. It began as an impasse. An impasse Béranger. Around 1824 it was transformed. It later became the Impasse de l’Astrolabe then the Rue de l’Astrolabe. Finally it received its current name Villa de l’Astrolabe. This happened through a municipal decree.

This quiet street has seen much history. Number 1 Villa de l’Astrolabe boasts another address too. It’s also 117 and 119 Rue de Vaugirard. Before World War II Elisabeth Roserot de Meslin lived there. During the Occupation her apartment became a post box. It served the Cohors network led by Jean Cavailles. Agents would deliver reports to the old lady. She then passed them on to a liaison agent. Even meetings of the network’s leadership were held there. That is until a raid by the Sicherheitsdienst in the 1940s.

The Villa de l’Astrolabe has witnessed further changes. In the 1950s the Fleuri-Delaporte school was located here. Later a small artists’ studio was set up at number 11. Number 12 held significance for a time too. Nathalie Lemel lived there. She was an activist with the Women’s Union during the Paris Commune of 1871.

The Villa de l’Astrolabe is more than just a street. It’s a living testament to Paris’s rich history. A place where shadows of the past mingle with the everyday life of today. A reminder that even the quietest corners of a city can whisper remarkable stories. A silent witness to the passage of time. It’s a place to pause and reflect on the echoes of history. As you walk the Villa de l’Astrolabe you connect with the past. The spirit of explorers and activists lives on in this small Parisian street.
