Free of charge? That’s right! Here at the Tiergehege, a cherished part of Bremen’s Bürgerpark, you won’t need to pay a single euro to enjoy the company of some delightful animals. You see, this Tiergehege has a long and fascinating history. It all began in the 19th century when animal enclosures were all the rage in public parks. The Bürgerpark, always keen to entertain, hopped on the bandwagon just three years after its creation. Their first attempt involved a pool for otters. It turned out to be a bit of a flop. Otters, as we all know, are incredibly shy creatures who prefer to sleep the day away. So they decided to switch things up! They brought in local, diurnal animals who wouldn’t mind the unpredictable German weather. For a while, they even housed kangaroos, who surprisingly thrived in this environment, producing a considerable number of offspring. After the war, Bobby the camel stole the show, becoming the undisputed star of the Tiergehege. Sadly, the cost of keeping exotic animals eventually took its toll. Today, the Tiergehege provides ample space for local animal and bird species that have become increasingly rare in the wild. Fallow deer, mountain goats, sheep, ducks, and even Bentheimer pigs call this place home. And of course, no visit is complete without saying hello to the adorable Meerschweinchen. But remember, as tempting as it may be, please refrain from feeding the animals. Your good intentions might actually harm them.
