Ever Ready House. The name itself evokes a sense of innovation and power. Right here before us stands Barnet House a twelve-storey testament to mid-20th-century architecture. But this imposing structure has a richer history than its modern facade suggests.

Originally conceived as the headquarters for the British Ever Ready Electrical Company it was completed in 1966. Designed by the renowned architect Richard Seifert Barnet House’s sleek lines and alternating bands of concrete and metal-framed windows reflected the optimism of the era. Before the construction of this impressive building the site housed a private villa Woodside. Built in 1841 for Joseph Baxendale it later served as a care home. The contrast between Woodside’s quiet domesticity and Barnet House’s assertive modernity is striking.

For years Barnet House served as the main offices of the London Borough of Barnet. The council’s decision to rename it reflects a shift in the building’s identity. It became a symbol of local governance a place where decisions affecting countless lives were made. This period marked a significant chapter in Barnet House’s story. It represented a period of civic pride.

However times change. The council eventually relocated to a new building in 2019 deeming Barnet House uneconomic to operate. This left the imposing structure vacant prompting ambitious but controversial plans. Proposals emerged to convert the building into 254 flats some worryingly small. The size of these planned apartments sparked a heated debate. Local councillors voiced concerns about the creation of cramped living spaces. The project faced hurdles. The London Mayor Sadiq Khan eventually rejected the initial planning application. His reason was the insufficient number of affordable homes. The future of Barnet House remains uncertain. Its transformation from corporate headquarters to residential accommodation is a story still unfolding.

Standing here today we can only speculate about what the future holds for Barnet House. Will it become a symbol of affordable housing or simply another example of London’s relentless development? Its past however is undeniable. Barnet House is a building with a multifaceted history. This history reflects the changing face of London itself. The structure stands as a silent observer of the city’s evolution a landmark waiting to write the next chapter in its story.
