Dare to step back in time with me here at Mosede Fort. This coastal fort whispers tales of a Denmark caught between warring nations. Mosede Fort stands as a silent sentinel. It guards the secrets of a nation that skillfully navigated the treacherous currents of World War I.

This is Mosede Fort. It was a vital part of Tunestillingen. This was a 22 km long line of fortifications designed to protect Copenhagen. Construction began in 1913. By July 1916, Mosede Fort stood battle-ready. It was initially known as Mosede Battery. But it quickly became popularly known as Mosede Fort.

Imagine this fort bristling with artillery. It had six 120mm rapid-firing howitzers aimed at the sea. Four 75mm guns stood ready for coastal, land, and air defense. A formidable array of Madsen machine guns protected the land. The fort even boasted searchlights to pierce the darkness.

Mosede Fort was more than just guns. It was a self-sufficient community. It had a generator, a water supply, and central heating. There was even a telephone and a kitchen. Bomb shelters could house 150 men.

In 1939, the fort was remanned. But in 1940, German forces captured it. They used it as an observation post and a prison camp. After Denmark’s liberation, the government used it as a detention camp until 1947.

Later, Hjemmeværnet used Mosede Fort for shooting practice until 1970. Then, locals “liberated” it. Since then, it has been a public park.

Today, Mosede Fort is preserved by Greve Kommune. It is now a popular recreational area. People come here for ballgames and picnics.

In 2010, Greve Kommune and Greve Museum began restoring the fort. They wanted to create Denmark’s first World War I museum. In 2012, a 120mm Howitzer was presented as the fort’s emblem. The museum opened on August 6, 2014.

As you explore Mosede Fort, remember the soldiers who stood guard here. They defended Denmark’s neutrality during a world at war. Lift the phones in the museum. Hear their stories about life on the fort. Feel the war artifacts with your hands.

Mosede Fort is more than just old concrete. It is a testament to Denmark’s resilience and its commitment to peace. A visit here will leave you with a deeper understanding of Denmark’s role in the First World War. It is a story of neutrality between warfare and welfare.
