Built to bolster Seattle’s growing electrical needs, the Georgetown Steam Plant stands as a monument to a bygone era. The Georgetown Steam Plant isn’t just a hulking concrete structure; it’s a time capsule. It whispers tales of innovation, competition, and the relentless pursuit of progress that defined early 20th-century Seattle. The Georgetown Steam Plant was born in 1907, a brainchild of the Stone & Webster conglomerate. This Boston-based giant held a firm grip on Seattle’s electricity and public transportation. Though hydropower was on the rise, the Georgetown Steam Plant served as a critical backup, ensuring a steady flow of power during peak demand or service interruptions. The plant’s construction was a marvel in itself. Frank Gilbreth Sr., a pioneering efficiency expert, orchestrated the project with almost military precision. He employed innovative reinforced concrete techniques. This not only made the plant earthquake-resistant but also showcased the potential of this then-new building material. Gilbreth’s system was a symphony of coordinated efforts. Pile drivers raced, while draftsmen finalized plans and concrete mixers churned. He even dispatched an expert to Pittsburgh to oversee the shipment of steel reinforcing rods, ensuring a seamless flow of materials. Inside the Georgetown Steam Plant’s walls, two Curtis vertical steam turbines hummed to life. These technological marvels, far more efficient than their reciprocating steam engine predecessors, helped usher in a new era of electricity generation. Though over 1,000 of these turbines were sold, the Georgetown Steam Plant boasts the only two still in their original location, a testament to the plant’s historical significance. The plant’s reign, however, was relatively short-lived. As hydropower became increasingly dominant, the Georgetown Steam Plant’s role diminished. By the 1940s, it operated only sparingly. After being purchased by Seattle City Light in 1951, it provided power one last time during the harsh winter of 1952-1953. Though silent now, the Georgetown Steam Plant remains a powerful symbol. It signifies a pivotal moment in Seattle’s history. It highlights the transition from steam to hydropower, the rise of reinforced concrete, and the ingenious minds that shaped the city’s infrastructure. Today, designated a National Historic Landmark, the Georgetown Steam Plant offers a glimpse into the past. It stands proudly as a reminder of the ingenuity and foresight that electrified Seattle and propelled it into the modern age.
