Standesamt Goetheallee is more than just a place to get married. It is a historic villa. It is a symbol of love and commitment. The villa has a rich past dating back to 1895. Karl Ernst Otto Weigang, a Bautzen merchant, built it. He used it as his summer residence until 1914. The Latin inscription “Beatus Ille Qui Procul Negotis” above the wooden staircase translates to “Happy is he who dwells far from business”. This reflects Weigang’s desire for a peaceful retreat.
Villa Weigang boasted impressive features for its time. It had a steam heating system and central ventilation. These were rare innovations in the late 19th century. Over the years, the villa changed hands. It even served as a police registration office after World War II.
Sadly, the villa fell into disrepair. Despite being a protected monument since 1978, renovations did not begin until 1991. The roof was infested with fungus. Wall coverings and ceiling gilding were gone. Paintings were painted over. The towers were cut off. The fountain was filled with dirt.
After three years of restoration, the Villa Weigang reopened on September 30, 1994. It became a sought-after wedding location. In 2013, it received the Hochzeitsaward. This award recognized it as Germany’s most beautiful registry office.
Standesamt Goetheallee offers two wedding halls. Both accommodate up to 25 guests. The opulent Hall Number 1 features an oriel with a window front. A beautiful stucco ceiling adorns it. The dark wood of the altar contrasts with the white chairs. Hall Number 2 has wood-paneled walls. An artistic coffered ceiling and crystal chandelier create a festive atmosphere.
Note that the Standesamt provides music for your ceremony. A duo plays piano and violin. You can also choose two songs to play from a CD.
