Gazing upon Christian’s Church, one might imagine the flurry of activity during its construction between 1754 and 1759. Christian’s Church is a stunning example of Rococo architecture, designed by the renowned Nicolai Eigtved. Originally known as Frederiks German Church, it served the large German community in Christianshavn. King Christian IV founded Christianshavn in 1617 as a merchant town, attracting German traders and craftsmen. They initially worshipped at the Church of Our Saviour but eventually sought their own space. King Christian VI granted them a former saltern and allowed a lottery to fund the project, leading to the church’s nickname, “The Lottery Church”. Christian’s Church stands as a testament to this unique history. Eigtved, known for his work on Amalienborg Palace, sadly passed away before construction began. His son-in-law, Georg David Anthon, completed the church, adding the 70-meter spire in 1769. Inside, the church resembles a theater. Three tiers of galleries offer excellent views of the podium, mimicking a stage. The altarpiece combines the altar table, pulpit, and organ, creating a dramatic focal point. The church also houses a crypt with 48 burial chapels. Notable figures like historian Peter Frederik Suhm and guitarist Link Wray are buried there. This “Theatre Church”, as it’s sometimes called, hosts concerts and artistic events, its design ensuring it never feels empty. Christian’s Church stands proudly, a blend of Rococo elegance and rich history, a must-see for any visitor to Copenhagen.
