Established in 1971, the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium stands as a testament to the pursuit of knowledge. This institution, named after the renowned Nobel Prize-winning physicist Werner Heisenberg, has been shaping young minds for over five decades. The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium isn’t just a place of learning; it’s a vibrant hub of activity. Originally built in a different era, the school’s commitment to modernization led to a complete reconstruction. The old building was demolished in early 2012, making way for a state-of-the-art facility. During construction, classes continued uninterrupted in a temporary container building. This dedication to education underscores the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium’s commitment to its students. The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium offers a diverse range of academic programs. It focuses on natural sciences and technology, while also providing a strong foundation in languages. This allows students to explore their interests and develop well-rounded skill sets. The student body is a mix of local and regional pupils. In the 2021/22 school year, 993 students attended the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium. 543 students came from Garching itself, 95 from Ismaning, and 64 from Unterföhring. About 264 students traveled from northern Munich, highlighting the school’s regional draw. The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium has a rich history of unique programs and initiatives. One such program is AbiBac. Started in 1999, AbiBac allows students to simultaneously earn both the German Abitur and the French Baccalauréat. In 2014, 17 students achieved this dual diploma. This prestigious program is only offered at five select gymnasiums in Bavaria, showcasing the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium’s commitment to international education. Another distinctive offering is the TUMKolleg, a partnership with the Technical University of Munich (TUM). This program allows gifted students to conduct their pre-scientific seminar work at a TUM research chair. This provides invaluable experience and fosters a deeper understanding of scientific inquiry. Beyond academics, the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium cultivates a thriving school community. A student-run newspaper, “Der Durchblick,” was founded in 2021. Later renamed “WHG Times,” the publication provides students with a platform to share their voices and perspectives. The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium’s dedication to holistic development extends beyond academics. The school offers a robust tutoring program for fifth-grade students, helping them transition into the new environment. A student-run health service, staffed by trained pupils, provides immediate medical assistance. These initiatives promote responsibility and create a supportive environment for all. The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium isn’t merely a school. It’s a community where tradition meets innovation. It’s a place where students are empowered to become future leaders, armed with the knowledge and skills to shape the world.
