To combat this, the Dutch built dams or “bendungan” to control the flow of water. These dams prevented the rivers from overflowing. They also provided a vital water source for the city’s residents.
The bendungan located in Tanah Abang was situated downstream. “Hilir” is the Indonesian word for downstream or “milir” in Betawi slang. Hence, the area became known as Bendungan Hilir. Over time, the name stuck and evolved into the vibrant neighborhood we see today.
But Benhil’s story doesn’t end with its colonial past. After Indonesia gained independence, Pejompongan and Bendungan Hilir were among the first neighborhoods to develop. This was driven by the need for housing for civil servants. In the 1950s, the planning and development of Gatot Subroto Road led to the opening of land in Pejompongan and Bendungan Hilir for new housing.
The Surabaya Council designed both neighborhoods following the Garden City principle. Jakarta Regency approved this new modern design.
Before 1966, Bendungan Hilir was better known as Pejompongan. This was due to the presence of the Pejompongan Housing Complex. However, in 1966, Bendungan Hilir officially became part of the Tanah Abang district.
Today, Bendungan Hilir thrives as a culinary paradise. As dusk settles, the area transforms into a bustling food market. Vendors line the streets selling a variety of dishes. The aroma of spices fills the air. This is especially true during Ramadan. Benhil becomes a haven for those seeking delicious food.
But Bendungan Hilir offers more than just street food. You can find restaurants. One notable establishment is RM Bopet Mini. This family-run restaurant preserves its traditional recipes. Another culinary hotspot is Goedkoop, a cafe with a Dutch-inspired theme.
