Did a jeweled tapestry once grace Müllerischer Weinberg? Here at Müllerischer Weinberg, it’s easy to imagine such splendor. This vineyard estate, nestled in Dresden’s Loschwitz district, whispers tales of opulence and ingenuity. Müllerischer Weinberg derives its name from Johann Melchior Dinglinger, a renowned court jeweler and one of Dresden’s wealthiest citizens in the early 18th century. He acquired this hillside property around 1700, transforming a simple vineyard into a testament to his lavish lifestyle. The original, modest half-timbered winegrower’s house was expanded with a grand baroque, sandstone south wing. Imagine Dinglinger hosting lavish gatherings in the spacious Elbe-facing hall, a masterpiece of design and innovation. A painted wind rose adorns the hall’s ceiling, its pointers connected to a weather vane on the roof by a mechanism crafted by court mechanic Andreas Gärtner around 1710. This ingenious device displayed the weather, wind direction, and strength, a marvel of early engineering. Legend says when Tsar Peter the Great visited Dinglinger in 1711, he was so captivated by this apparatus that Dinglinger had a copy made for him, a treasured artifact still preserved in Saint Petersburg today. The legacy of Müllerischer Weinberg extends beyond its opulent architecture. The estate also played a role in Dresden’s artistic history. Court painter Christian Benjamin Müller etched a landscape featuring Dinglinger’s vineyard, capturing its scenic beauty for posterity. Over the centuries, Müllerischer Weinberg passed through various hands, from the merchant Jean Souchay in 1859 to Consul Bruno Wunderlich, who also owned the neighboring Eckberg Castle. For a time, its connection to Dinglinger was almost forgotten, its significance obscured by time. However, in 1940, Erna von Watzdorf rediscovered its history, using a 1725 document detailing the vineyard’s expansion to definitively link it back to the illustrious jeweler. Müllerischer Weinberg endured through tumultuous times, surviving World War II and the DDR era. The dedicated efforts of preservationist Hans Nadler, who lived on the estate from 1955 to 2002, helped protect it from decay. In more recent times, the estate has been meticulously restored. The vineyard was replanted, with the first harvest taking place in 2002. A sandstone fountain from Dinglinger’s era was even acquired and placed in front of the house in 2014, a final touch of historical authenticity. Today, Müllerischer Weinberg stands as a testament to Dresden’s rich past, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
