“A public moorage!” Can you imagine those words echoing with promise back in 1910? That’s the story of Ohlers Island. This small island in Lake Washington holds a unique place in Seattle’s history.

Ohlers Island itself is a physical feature. It’s an island in King County. You’ll find it nestled within the 98118 ZIP Code.

Back then, the Seattle Parks Board made a pledge to the Lakewood neighbors. They anticipated the loss of waterfront lots. This was when Lake Washington was lowered in 1917. The promise was a public moorage.

However, Seattle didn’t deliver on that promise until 1952. CB Dodge’s private boathouse stood on Ohlers Island. It was renovated. It then became the publicly owned Lakewood Moorage.

Parks and Lakewood neighbors collaborated. They wanted to create a public moorage facility. Their goal was minimal impact on the natural surroundings. They didn’t want to disrupt the community. The aim was alignment with the Olmsted vision. This vision created Lake Washington Boulevard.

Near Ohlers Island, you’ll also discover Lakewood Sanctuary. Birds, turtles, and beavers find shelter here. It’s a small cove along Lake Washington’s shore. In 2022, Seattle Parks and Recreation worked to protect this area. They worked with community members for native plants and wildlife.

You might spot blue herons standing still. They are waiting for prey. Turtles may be sunning themselves on logs. You can listen for the chime of red-winged blackbirds. Ospreys might be winging overhead. They may be perching on a snag. Beavers can be seen swimming in the dusky hours. They might be munching on water lilies. Ducks and kingfishers also enjoy these waters.

Ohlers Island is reached by a walkway from the mainland. At some point, there will be public access during business hours. This will offer another vantage point. You can view the Sanctuary from there.

So, as you stand here on Ohlers Island, think about the past. Think about the promises made and kept. Consider the community’s vision. It all came together to create this unique space. It blends human recreation and natural preservation.
