Wat Pinbang-Onn

Amidst the bustling energy of Jalan Masjid Negeri, stands Wat Pinbang-Onn. It’s a tranquil oasis, a beacon of peace. Wat Pinbang-Onn isn’t just one temple, but two. The Inner Sanctuary Temple and the Outer Sanctuary Temple share the name and this special location. The history of Wat Pinbang-Onn stretches back to 1889, when Green Lane, as it was then known, was primarily farmland. The temple predates many of the surrounding landmarks, witnessing the area’s transformation over the decades. Although established in 1889, Wat Pinbang-Onn received its official name much later. In 1934, Prince Swasdi, son of King Chulalongkorn of Thailand, bestowed the name upon the temple. Before this, it was simply called Wat Nok, meaning “Outer Temple,” to distinguish it from Wat Nai, the “Inner Temple” next door. This seemingly small detail reveals a deeper connection to Thai royalty and history. Wat Pinbang-Onn serves the Malaysian community of Thai descent, many hailing from Southern Thailand. It’s also a unique place of worship. Wat Pinbang-Onn is the only temple in the region to observe Soong Prit. This ceremony, held on the 15th day of the 10th moon of the Thai calendar, is a poignant farewell to departed souls. Food chariots are prepared and offered with prayers, a beautiful expression of filial piety. Interestingly, some Chinese also participate in Soong Prit, believing it brings merit. Wat Pinbang-Onn also holds the tomb of Phraya Manopakorn Nititada, the first Prime Minister of Siam, exiled to Penang after a 1933 coup. His final resting place adds another layer of historical significance to this unassuming temple. As you stand before Wat Pinbang-Onn, take a moment to appreciate the tranquility.
