Three major construction projects shaped St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Each project respected the original English country heritage. The church nestled into its creek side location. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church stands proudly in Minneapolis. It’s a significant landmark a testament to enduring faith. Its history stretches back to the 1880s. The church served a largely Irish immigrant population. The building itself however dates to 1889-1891. It’s a fine example of Richardsonian Romanesque and Romanesque Revival architecture. Sandstone brick concrete and copper were used in its construction. St. Stephen’s was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
The church wasn’t always Episcopal. It was originally a Roman Catholic church. In 2008 Father Joseph A Williams became pastor. His efforts to modernize the parish led to some conflict. Many older parishioners left. However Father Williams later revitalized the church building a thriving Latino community the largest in Minnesota. He was appointed auxiliary bishop in 2021. He remained pastor until 2022. That year St Stephen’s merged with Holy Rosary parish. They became the Church of St. Stephen-Holy Rosary.
Today St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church continues its mission. It offers four Sunday services. They range from contemplative to contemporary. The church also provides a nursery. It’s a place of worship and community. A house of prayer for all people. Its history reflects both challenges and triumphs. The church’s enduring presence is a testament to the power of faith and community. It remains a vibrant part of Minneapolis. Its legacy lives on. It’s a special place a beacon of hope and community.
