Synagoge

Hidden within Kassel, the Synagoge stands as a testament to a vibrant history. The Synagoge’s story begins long before the modern building, stretching back to 1293. Early records reveal a Jewish presence in Kassel, solidified by the existence of a “Jews’ street” in 1318. The community thrived, establishing a synagogue and cemetery by 1398. Tragedy struck during the Black Death, but the community persevered. The Synagoge witnessed a complex dance of expulsion and acceptance. Landgrave Philip expelled Jews from Hesse-Kassel in 1524, yet later admitted a court agent. A restrictive tolerance law was issued, less harsh than the proposals of reformer Martin Butzer. The Thirty Years’ War brought further upheaval, forcing Jews to leave Kassel. Yet, the Court Jew Benedict Goldschmidt gained residence privileges, and services were held in his home. The community grew, necessitating the construction of a synagogue in 1714, later enlarged in 1755. By 1808, emancipation laws brought new possibilities, and reforms were introduced by Israel Jacobson. The 19th century saw a new synagogue built in 1839, accommodating a thousand people. The Synagoge became a focal point of Jewish life, but its peace was shattered during Kristallnacht in 1938. While the courageous local firemen extinguished the initial fire on November 7th, the synagogue was not spared for long. Two days later, the synagogue was burned down. The community’s records were tragically destroyed. Deportations followed, tearing families apart. After the war, a small community returned, and a new synagogue with a community center was built in 1965. As the community grew, another new Synagoge was consecrated in 2000. The Synagoge in Kassel stands as a symbol of resilience, a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Jewish community amidst trials and tribulations.
