Lost in the heart of Victoria’s Yarra Ranges lies Narbethong. A small town steeped in history it boasts a captivating past. Nestled amongst towering trees Narbethong first saw European settlers around 1865. Frederick Fisher a man with a vision established the first settlement. He built the Black Spur Inn a twelve-room hotel. This was a crucial step in connecting Melbourne to the Woods Point goldfields. The name Narbethong itself is a bit of a mystery. Some say it’s derived from Narberth a town in Wales Fisher’s homeland. Others believe it’s an Aboriginal word meaning cheerful place.

Narbethong’s story isn’t just about its beginnings. It’s about resilience. The town faced devastating bushfires in 1939 and again in 2009. The Black Friday and Black Saturday bushfires left much of Narbethong in ruins. Initial reports after the 1939 fire suggested only the hotel remained. Yet the school and The Hermitage stood strong testaments to the town’s enduring spirit.

Despite the setbacks Narbethong thrived. A new public hall was built in 2011. This modern marvel is constructed from local timber. It is also wrapped in a bronze mesh fire-resistant screen. This symbolises the town’s determination to rebuild and to withstand future challenges. It shows that the people of Narbethong were not defeated.

Narbethong’s cinematic charm adds another layer to its story. A scene in the classic 1959 film On the Beach was filmed here. Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner’s characters spent their first night together in Narbethong. This adds a touch of Hollywood glamour to this charming Victorian town. The town has also been a popular tourist spot since the late 1800s. Lindt’s Hermitage was a big draw. This popularity extended to nearby Marysville.

Today Narbethong continues to attract visitors. It offers a blend of natural beauty and rich history. From its humble beginnings to its modern resilience Narbethong’s tale is one of endurance and charm. It is a must-visit for anyone exploring the stunning beauty of the Victorian highlands.
