Community High School

In 1947, a spark ignited in southeastern Collin County. Several small school districts, Josephine, Lavon, Nevada, Mt. Pisgah, Millwood, and McMinn, combined their resources. They formed a new entity: the Community Rural High School, later known as Community High School. This building, right here before us, is a testament to their shared vision. Community High School opened its doors in 1948 with 235 students across all twelve grades. The first graduating class, the class of ’48, had only nine students. They were tasked with a unique responsibility. They selected the school’s song, mascot, and colors, laying the foundation for future generations of Braves and Lady Braves. The district continued to grow. Soon after its founding, Copeville School joined the district, further strengthening the sense of community. The school’s mascot, the Braves/Lady Braves, reflects this shared identity. The actual mascot name, Lacone Jo, chosen in 1986, is a clever combination of the first two letters of the towns within the district: LAvon, COpeville, NEvada, and JOsephine. Community High School isn’t just about academics. It’s a hub of extracurricular activities, from sports like baseball, basketball, and football to a thriving Speech, Theatre, and Debate program. The Dazzlin’ Dames drill team brings energy and excitement to football games and competitions. The band fills the air with music, consistently earning high ratings at UIL competitions. In 2015, the Varsity baseball team brought winning pride back to Community ISD, securing a Bi-District Title. Even with its growth and changes, Community High School remains rooted in its history. It serves as a reminder of the power of collaboration and the importance of community spirit.
