Opened in 1942 by the National Youth Administration it served as a vital hub. Two blocks from here it fostered a strong sense of community.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department took over in 1946. In 1956 the center moved to this location. The adjacent park developed from community input. The center was renamed in 1996 honoring Oswaldo A.B. Cantu a former boxing coach. He was a pillar of this neighborhood. He dedicated his life to its youth.

The Hillside Amphitheater a colorful addition dating back to 1958 is an iconic feature. Artist Raul Valdez’s murals adorn its walls. They depict the Mexican-American experience. From migrant families to political activists the murals are powerful. They tell stories of birth life and death. The amphitheater hosts the Hillside Summer Concert Series.
