“Capital Federal” reads one weathered face. This is Mojón 11 a silent sentinel standing guard on Avenida General Paz. It’s one of the few remaining boundary markers from 1887. That year marked a pivotal moment in Argentine history. The province of Buenos Aires ceded land to become the nation’s capital. Mojón 11 and its brethren were strategically placed. They physically defined the newly established limits between the city and the province. Imagine the vast pampas stretching out around them. Carts and diligencias once traversed these lands. Today Mojón 11 witnesses a relentless flow of modern traffic.

The cast iron Mojón 11 is roughly 0 80 meters tall. Its width measures 32 centimeters on each side. Three sides bear inscriptions. “Capital Federal” proclaims its side. “Provincia de Buenos Aires” is etched on the opposite face. The number 11 and the kilometer marker indicate its position along Avenida General Paz. The precise boundary between city and province runs through the center of Mojón 11. The avenue itself belongs entirely to the Capital Federal. Provincial territory begins just beyond the avenue’s edge. A fascinating detail is that some neighbors technically sleep and live in the province. When they step outside their homes however they’re already on Capital Federal soil.

Mojón 11 is a silent witness to this historical transition. It embodies the negotiation and compromise between the national government and the province. Its placement was meticulously surveyed by engineers Pablo Blot and Luis Silveyra in 1888. Their work was subsequently approved by President Juárez Celman and Governor Máximo Paz. The act of physically placing these markers was the culmination of years of political maneuvering. The transfer of Flores and Belgrano parties solidified the federalization process.

The original plan called for 23 mojones. Only 10 including Mojón 11 remain. Some are embedded in walls others are more exposed. Some have even been stolen and recast. Mojón 11 however has endured. It stands firm a testament to its enduring significance. It’s a tangible piece of Buenos Aires’s past. A reminder of the city’s complex history. Its simple design and weathered metal hide a powerful narrative. A story of territorial disputes political agreements and enduring legacies. Look closely at Mojón 11. It whispers stories of a bygone era. It reminds us of the ongoing negotiation between the past and the present in this dynamic city. Remember Mojón 11’s quiet strength. Remember its enduring story.
