A steel giant stretches across the Lockwitz Valley. This is the Lockwitztalbrücke, an architectural marvel. The Lockwitztalbrücke carries the A17 Autobahn from Dresden to Prague. It’s the longest of the eleven major bridges on this route. Completed in 2005, it stands as a testament to modern engineering. The Lockwitztalbrücke isn’t just a bridge, it’s a story. It’s a story of ambition and innovation. Its construction began in the summer of 2002. The bridge spans 723 meters and reaches a height of 64 meters at its highest point over the Lockwitzbach stream. The design is unique. The bridge features two separate superstructures, each supported by eight pillars. The bridge’s layout follows a curve with a radius of 2500 meters. Notice the half-arches beneath the roadway? They act like braces, supporting the steel and concrete structure above. This design minimizes the number of pillars in the valley. This was a crucial consideration to protect the delicate Fauna-Flora-Habitat below. The Lockwitztalbrücke was built with the environment in mind. The construction process was a feat of engineering. The steel box girder of the roadway was inserted using an incremental launching method. Imagine the precision required to move such a massive structure into place. The arches were built symmetrically on both sides of the pillars after the roadway was in place. This minimized stress and deformation on the pillars. Even the concrete used in the bridge tells a story. The main pillars are made of reinforced concrete and form a monolithic frame. This frame stiffens the bridge, counteracting deformations caused by temperature changes and traffic loads. Sadly, the construction of the Lockwitztalbrücke wasn’t without tragedy. One worker lost his life during the assembly process. This serves as a reminder of the human cost behind such monumental projects. Today, the Lockwitztalbrücke stands as a symbol of progress.
