A hidden gem awaits you. Right here stands the Hawaii Ishizuchi Shrine.

This unassuming shrine holds a unique story. It’s not a branch of the famous Ishizuchi Shrine in Japan. Its founding is rather unusual. In 1918 a Japanese woman named Mitaku Shina founded it. She claimed a revelation from a mountain kami. After identifying the kami as the one from Mount Ishizuchi in Japan she undertook intense spiritual training. She then received a bunrei a divided spirit. She returned to Hawaii with this spirit establishing the shrine.

Many people including long-time Oahu residents are unaware of its existence. The shrine is tucked away. Its main building is set back from the street. You might miss it. Yet its presence is marked by a striking white torii gate.

The priest who sometimes attends the shrine has a day job. He’s often unavailable. The shrine typically distributes amulets only during New Year’s. This is quite a surprise to most visitors. A blog post details a visitor’s encounter with the priest. The priest explained the lack of regular amulet distribution. He repeated this several times. This shows how often he gets asked this question.

The shrine’s history and infrequent staffing highlights Hawaii’s unique blend of cultures. It’s a testament to individual faith. This small shrine quietly continues its tradition. It is a small but significant piece of Honolulu’s cultural landscape. Remember this story of perseverance and spiritual devotion. It is the tale of the Hawaii Ishizuchi Shrine.
