Here, where the former Dubois railway station stood, rises the Campus Condorcet – Porte de la Chapelle. This new site will open its doors in autumn 2025. It represents a significant expansion for the Campus Condorcet. The Campus Condorcet is an inter-university campus of the universities of Paris.
The Campus Condorcet – Porte de la Chapelle aims to accommodate 3,500 students. These will be undergraduate students at the University of Paris 1. It will provide 20,000 m2 of classrooms, a library, and gardens.
Françoise Mauffret and Jean Guervilly are the architects behind this modern design. Their campus design opens onto the Boulevard Ney. This design contributes to the ongoing regeneration of Porte de la Chapelle. The area is experiencing a significant transformation. Notably, the Arena stadium was built for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
The vision for Campus Condorcet – Porte de la Chapelle began to take shape in 2016. It sought to address the lack of student spaces at Panthéon-Sorbonne University. The goal was to create better campus life.
The campus is structured around a large garden. The library has 720 seats and faces a CROUS cafeteria with 350 seats. The cafeteria is designed to serve 1,000 meals per day. After hours, the dining area transforms into a co-working space.
Small spaces with hot beverage vending machines are on the upper floors. There are 200 seats located between the ground floor and the 3rd floor. Staff have access to dedicated break rooms.
Above the CROUS area, a large space caters to student life. It includes five offices for social services. There are also meeting rooms for university associations. A 45 m2 room is available for workshops. There is also a 100 m2 open-space for associations. Two soundproof studios for music and theater are on the ground floor.
The City of Paris supports Campus Condorcet – Porte de la Chapelle. They provided the land and funded a third of the construction. An extension of the Maison Étudiante is in the building.
The Campus Condorcet project started in 2008. It united several universities including Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Construction at Porte de la Chapelle started in 2023. It faced delays because of an unsuccessful call for proposals.
The main Condorcet Campus site is in Aubervilliers. By 2022, it hosted 12,000 researchers and doctoral students. They worked in 116 research units. The Humathèque Condorcet library has one million books. Elizabeth de Portzamparc designed it.
By 2025, an 8,000 m2 building will be completed for the École Pratique des Hautes Études. The expansion faced challenges. Institutions were hesitant to move from central Paris. There were also architectural competition issues.
Campus Condorcet – Porte de la Chapelle links to the Aubervilliers site. Together, they create a major university hub for the social sciences. This enhances the educational environment at La Chapelle. Students and staff will have a modern campus. It will have excellent transport links to Paris. It is only one metro stop from the Aubervilliers site.
