Founded in 1907, the Evangelisch-Lutherische St. Trinitatisgemeinde in Leipzig holds a unique place in the city’s religious history. Imagine the early days of this community. Two women from the Lutheran State Church became interested in the Evangelisch-Lutherische Freikirche. Their names were Frau Schwabe and Frau Seifert. Soon, regular services began in Leipzig. In 1893, the two women joined the Lutheran Free Church.
In 1907, the St. Trinitatisgemeinde became an independent congregation. Initially, ministers from Crimmitschau and Dresden served the community. By 1921, August Stallmann became the first pastor. Before World War II, the congregation numbered 170 to 200 members. They gathered in Leipzig and Bitterfeld. Lacking their own building, they held services in schools and a YMCA hall.
After 1945, the congregation grew to over 400 due to an influx of refugees. These refugees came from the East. In 1947, Walter Rüger became the pastor. Construction of an emergency church began in Eutritzsch in 1949. The congregation used this church until 1984.
The St. Trinitatisgemeinde faced challenges. The building of the Berlin Wall caused members to leave for the West. This reduced the congregation to its pre-war size. From 1966 to 1984, Johannes Rüger served as pastor. In the early 1980s, disagreements arose. These disagreements concerned the understanding of Holy Scripture. A split occurred over the belief that the Bible is God’s perfect word. The larger part of the congregation joined the Old Lutheran Church. Their pastor went with them.
The remaining members of St. Trinitatisgemeinde met in various temporary locations. They often gathered in the homes of members. From 1988 to 2019, Martin Hoffmann was the pastor. In the early 1990s, the congregation acquired a property with a house. This property housed both the church and the Lutheran Theological Seminary.
Recently, the St. Trinitatisgemeinde has experienced growth. New members have joined. People have moved from other congregations to join it. Since 2019, Benjamin Stöhr has been the pastor. He was born in 1983.
Today, the St. Trinitatisgemeinde continues its mission. The church stands as a testament to faith. It also is a testament to perseverance through changing times. Regular services take place every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. These services alternate between preaching and communion. Children’s services are available during the sermon.
The St. Trinitatisgemeinde offers many activities. Bible study occurs every two weeks. A faith course explores the basics of Christianity. Children enjoy a bi-weekly gathering with biblical themes. Older members have their own Bible study group. This study is done with coffee and cake. Several house groups meet to study the Bible. They discuss its relevance to daily life.
Music plays a vital role in the church. A choir enriches services. A brass band also participates. The congregation currently numbers around 90. About a third of these are children. This makes it a young and vibrant community.
The Evangelisch-Lutherische St. Trinitatisgemeinde may look like a house from the outside. However, within its walls lies a strong community. It is a community dedicated to faith, fellowship, and service. The congregation extends a warm invitation. All are welcome to join in their worship and activities.
