Wow. Look at the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center. This magnificent building isn’t just brick and mortar. It’s a testament to Austin’s vibrant arts scene. The Fine Arts Center holds a special place in the heart of Southwestern University.
In 1956 a generous gift from Mrs Alma Thomas of Austin brought this three-story building to life. It houses two theaters a recital hall an art gallery studios and offices for the Art Art History Music and Theatre Departments. It’s a hub of creativity. Think of the countless performances rehearsals and artistic explorations that have taken place within these walls.
The Fine Arts Center wasn’t always this impressive though. In 1999 an 18000 square foot addition expanded the space. This extension allowed for more music and visual arts studies. A thrust stage theater the Jesse H Jones and Mary Gibbs Jones Theater arrived in 1993 thanks to the Houston Endowment Inc. This addition significantly enhanced the Fine Arts Center’s performance capabilities.
Then there’s the story of the $10 million renovation completed in 2007. This two-year project didn’t just update the Alma Thomas Theater. It also revitalized rehearsal halls practice rooms and even added new entrances. The renovation transformed the Fine Arts Center making it even more functional and beautiful.
A key element of the expansion was a gift from Fayez Sarofim. This donation resulted in the addition of teaching studios for music drawing and painting studios. A secure gallery and faculty offices were also built. These improvements solidify the Fine Arts Center’s position as a leading center for the arts in Austin. So the Fine Arts Center stands as a symbol of Austin’s commitment to arts and culture. Its growth reflects the ongoing dedication to artistic expression and education. It’s more than a building.
