“Did you know Bishop Noll Institute started as Catholic Central High School?” I ask. The imposing brick building stands before us a testament to years of learning and faith. Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond Indiana opened its doors in 1921. The Sisters of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ founded this remarkable institution.

Initially the school lacked a permanent home. It began humbly in two borrowed classrooms. Father Lauer a pastor at Saint Mary’s Church provided this temporary space. A new building was planned. Construction on White Oak Avenue began in 1922. However delays meant five temporary structures had to be built quickly. The 1922-1923 senior class studied in these makeshift classrooms.

The left wing of the new building finally opened in 1923. A unique outdoor Mass was celebrated to mark the occasion. An estimated 5000 people attended this historic event the first of its kind in the United States. Over the next decade the school expanded adding a convent rectory and gymnasium.

In 1947 the school received its current name Bishop Noll High School. This honored John F Noll of the Diocese of Fort Wayne. A further dedication took place in 1963. Bishop Andrew G Grutka laid the cornerstone for the new Bishop Noll Institute. The school continues to thrive. It’s a testament to the vision of its founders and the dedication of its educators.

Bishop Noll Institute boasts a rich athletic tradition. Its teams known as the Warriors compete in the Greater South Shore Conference. They’ve won numerous state championships in baseball football swimming soccer and hockey. The school currently offers a wide variety of sports. This ensures every student has the opportunity to participate in athletics.

Throughout its history Bishop Noll has produced notable alumni. These include Robert Joseph Buchanan a renowned neurosurgeon and bioethicist. Judge Gonzalo P Curiel is another notable graduate. Phil Ponce a well-known Chicago television journalist also attended Bishop Noll. The school is proud of its alumni’s achievements. Their success reflects the quality of education they received. Bishop Noll Institute continues its legacy. It remains a cornerstone of the community shaping future leaders.
