“Red Church” is more than just a name. It hints at Veresegyház’s past. Legend says the name comes from a red brick church. Or perhaps it recalls bloody battles long ago.

Welcome to Veresegyház a town northeast of Budapest. It is one of Hungary’s fastest-growing cities. Today around 16000 people call Veresegyház home.

Archaeological finds show people lived here long ago. Around 4000 to 2500 BC humans already settled in Veresegyház. The first written record dates back to 1375. Over time the town had many names. One interesting form appears on a document from 1399 Weruseghaz.

The town’s history stretches from prehistoric times to today. In 1984 a Sarmatian tomb was found. It held gold and silver jewelry. Also practical items were found in it. Avar-era finds from 568-670 AD were discovered in Ivacs. This area now belongs to Veresegyház.

Veresegyház became important within the Vác diocese. It was a chief archdeaconry at the end of the 14th century. Later during the Anjou period fish ponds belonged to the Vác bishopric. Under Turkish rule Veresegyház became a sultan’s estate. After the Turks were expelled the Vác bishopric created the Veresegyház county.

In the 1810s the town was famous for its wine. Sadly the 1880s phylloxera plague destroyed the vines. The population grew steadily. This boosted transportation.

In 1911 the electric railway started between Budapest Veresegyház and Vác. It detoured through Szada-Gödöllő. This was Hungary’s first electric railway.

Locals still farmed. Strawberry growing the main activity appears on the town’s coat of arms. Transportation improvements also helped trade and tourism. Unique natural features significantly boosted tourism.

The Veresegyház Lake Regulation and Bathing Association formed in 1925. In 1929 the beach opened with changing rooms a restaurant and rentable rooms. Spa tourism thrived until World War II. Like everywhere else the war greatly hurt Veresegyház’s development.

After the war rebuilding began. Rail transport resumed. During socialism Soviet-style policies hindered tourism. Agriculture industry and healthcare followed eastern models.

Since 1990 the town has boomed. The population tripled. Veresegyház became a typical commuter town. In 1999 it officially became a city.

Infrastructure improved and continues to today. Veresegyház is a mix of long-time residents and newcomers. It strives to be more than just a bedroom community. It aims to be a regional center leveraging its economic strength.

Privatization in the 1990s shaped Veresegyház’s growth. The local government bought land. New housing and industrial areas arose based on a new master plan. New public buildings reflect an architectural concept. This concept respects local traditions and defines the town’s look.

Former resort areas are now mostly residential. Thermal water lake systems and the improving Bear Farm boost tourism. The Gödöllő Hills’ wildlife also attracts visitors.

Veresegyház shows us how a town can evolve. From ancient settlements to a modern city its story is rich. The name itself carries layers of history. It connects to both brick and blood. As Veresegyház grows it honors its past.
