Before Memorial Stadium stood tall in Minneapolis Stadium Village was already a vibrant hub. It served the University of Minnesota’s East Bank campus. Students flocked to its bars and restaurants.

Stadium Village isn’t an official Minneapolis neighborhood yet. It’s a crucial commercial district though. It’s planned to become an official neighborhood soon. It’s located in Southeast Minneapolis south of Hennepin Avenue. It’s on the Mississippi River’s east bank. The heart of Stadium Village is roughly at Oak Street SE and Washington Avenue SE.

The name Stadium Village? It’s a nod to the old Memorial Stadium. The University of Minnesota’s football team played there until 1981. The team moved to the Metrodome then. Memorial Stadium was demolished in 1992. The area kept its name though. The University of Minnesota Aquatic Center and McNamara Alumni Center now stand there. Other university sports venues are nearby too. In 2009 TCF Bank Stadium opened near the old stadium’s site. The university even put up billboards saying “Stadium Village Now with stadium”.

Imagine the transformation. From a football stadium to a bustling commercial district. Stadium Village is more than just a name. It’s a story of change and adaptation. It shows the ever-evolving relationship between a university and its surrounding community. It’s a place where history and the present meet. A place that will continue to evolve. Today it’s a lively destination for students and visitors alike. It offers a unique blend of history and modern life. The spirit of the old stadium lives on. It lives on in the name of Stadium Village.
