Millennium Park

Millennium Park is a public park, located in the Loop community area of Chicago. It is a prominent civic center near the city’s Lake Michigan shoreline that covers a 24.5-acre section of northwestern Grant Park. This modern wonder began as a humble parking lot and railroad station before becoming one of the largest green roofs in the world. It was once considered a dull space overlooking a rail yard, but now Millennium Park is a vibrant hub of art, music, and entertainment. The park’s most recognizable landmark, nicknamed “The Bean” by the locals, is actually called Cloud Gate, reflecting both the sky and the Chicago skyline. It is a three-story reflective steel sculpture. Anish Kapoor, the world-renowned artist, designed the sculpture, and it is the first public artwork in the United States by him. Another popular attraction in Millennium Park is Crown Fountain. Crown Fountain is an interactive work of public art and video sculpture. It is designed by Catalan conceptual artist Jaume Plensa. It consists of a black granite reflecting pool placed between a pair of transparent glass brick towers. One thousand Chicagoans’ faces appear on LED screens built into the glass brick towers in random order. The water feature is a popular spot for children, who love to splash in the water.
