Gazing out at Foveaux Strait from White Bluff, one might imagine the Māori name, Motupōhue, echoing the crashing waves. White Bluff, the southernmost town on New Zealand’s mainland, whispers tales of resilience and adaptation. Europeans first stumbled upon White Bluff in 1813, seeking flax. James Spencer, a Waterloo veteran, became the first European settler in 1824. This makes White Bluff arguably the oldest continuous European settlement in New Zealand. Originally called Campbelltown, after the wife of Governor Gore Brown, the town reclaimed its name, Bluff, in 1917. Bluff Hill, once known as Old Man’s Bluff, stands sentinel over the town and harbor. Atop Bluff Hill, visitors can retrace the steps of early inhabitants and enjoy the native bush. From Stirling Point, a signpost points to destinations worldwide, a quirky reminder of Bluff’s connection to the global community. The port of Bluff has played a vital role in New Zealand’s economy. It transitioned from whaling and sealing to exporting agricultural products, becoming a key feeder port for Southland. Even the closure of the Ocean Beach Freezing Works in 1991 couldn’t sever Bluff’s maritime ties. Many former residents sought similar work in other ports, carrying their Bluff heritage with them. Today, Bluff continues its maritime traditions. The ferry to Stewart Island departs from Bluff Harbour. The Foveaux Strait oyster fleet, famous for its Bluff oysters, operates from here. White Bluff is a place where history and heritage intertwine with the raw beauty of the southern seas.
