“Raguenets?” A puzzled expression might cross your face. It is because Rue des Raguenets is a name you may not know, but its story whispers through the streets of Paris.

Rue des Raguenets is located in the heart of Paris. It is more than just a street. It is a journey through time. It is a story etched in stone and whispered by the wind.

Imagine rose bushes. Imagine rose bushes brightening up the surrounding gardens. The street got its name from these rose bushes. Rue des Rosiers means the Street of the Rose Trees. This street is located next to the old fortification wall of Paris. On the wall, there were many roses growing. They made the street beautiful. Today, locals still plant a few rose trees in front of their balconies. The city also decorates the fronts of cute boutiques.

Rue des Raguenets runs alongside where Philippe Auguste’s ramparts once stood in 1230. This area became a haven for Jewish immigrants. They brought their culture and traditions to the area.

The Jewish community has been famous here since its creation. The Pletzl is the Yiddish translation of Marais. The street became known for its kosher butcher shops. The Jewish immigrants were escaping antisemitism. They came from Eastern Europe. They came from Russia and Turkey. They wanted to start a new life in Paris.

The Germans and police rounded up French Jews during World War II. They sent them to camps. The street was also under attacks in 1982. The street is now secured by the police and the army.

Rue des Raguenets is a reminder of resilience. It is a reminder of community, and rebirth. It is where you can wear a kippah and walk freely in the street. You can enjoy the Jewish culture of Paris in total security.

In 2006, Rue des Rosiers became pedestrianised. This made it easier for tourists to visit. Many trendy shops are opening their doors.

There are at least 4 synagogues around Rue des Rosiers. There are 2 jewish schools. Notice the Murciano Bakery. It is an orthodox bakery. It has a beautiful front. It has many delicious pastries from North Africa.

Right next to Murciano bakery is a Jewish Cafe. It has live klezmer music. People are always singing Jewish songs. You will see the Yiddish sign made by the artist Shabi Fiumei. Notice also some hidden Jewish decoration on the boutique fronts.

There is a commemorative plaque for the attacks on the Goldenberg Restaurant. There are many other commemorative plaques about the deported children during the second war.

There are so many falafel places. As de Falafel is the best one. They are kosher. They respect shabbat. They make their own kosher bread.

The street art is by the Hungarian artist Sebestyén Fiumei. He wrote in yiddish “pletzl”.

Rue des Raguenets continues to evolve. It attracts visitors with its charm and history. It invites reflection and appreciation. It is a testament to Parisian life. It is where the past and present intertwine.
