Whispers of a vanished isle drift on the breeze. Before you lies the ghostly footprint of Tündér-sziget. This small island once nestled in the Danube’s embrace. Now mostly submerged it remains a fascinating echo of the past.
Tündér-sziget’s story begins in the 1930s. A few sandbars emerged from the Danube’s currents. These were near the Luppa-sziget. This is visible on old 10-forint coins. Gradually these sandbars merged to form the island. By the 1960s Tündér-sziget was a fully formed islet. Even a small neighbouring island. The Egyfa-sziget seemed to migrate to become part of Tündér-sziget.
Then came a transformation. A cross-dam was built between 1958 and 1962. This was to improve navigation on the Danube. The dam however had an unexpected effect. It drastically altered the flow of the river. Silting began rapidly. The increased water level also had an effect. Tündér-sziget’s fate was sealed.
The relentless power of the river worked its magic. Vegetation slowly reclaimed the former island. The once-clear waters grew muddy. By the 1980s extensive silting occurred. This was exacerbated by nearby gravel mining. The riverbed deepened. The island’s eventual disappearance was inevitable.
Today little remains of Tündér-sziget. A narrow channel marks its former location. Only during high water can you still navigate this area. This passageway however is gradually disappearing. It offers a unique perspective. A glimpse into a fleeting moment of the Danube’s ever-changing landscape. Tündér-sziget is gone. But its story is a reminder of nature’s power. A powerful testament to the river’s relentless transformation.
